How/Can you do a full restore?

For backups, do you ever backup your entire system for a box or just the important files that change? I tried to do a full restore on "/" but it did not turn out very well.

I am sure there is backup software out there that'll let you do it, but I assume I can get everything installed and working again and just backup my important configuration files and my home directories with rsync. You have to be real careful how you backup and restore because of file permissions and stuff like that you need to ensure doesn't change.

Google for Mondo Rescue and take a look at their site. Its a good approach to backup as it includes the solution to the restore as well!

I use acronis true image for my backups. the program itself only installs on windows boxes, but from there you can create bootable rescue media on either a cd or floppy. from there you use the cd or floppy to boot into the backup software and from there you can either create or restore partitions or entire disk drives. it uses snap shot technology, I have had great success with it.
