how can linux load webpages faster?

I have a computer with a 56k dial up external fax modem made by
usrobotics. I am not sure about the model number because it was rubbed off of
the modem. The modem works fine under Windows xp, but in Linux, the
Internet speed is super slow. I talked to someone about this, and he said,
"Get a driver." I am not sure if usrobitcs supports Linux for all of
the modems, and I'm not sure if there is anything I can do because the
model number can't be read on the modem. I think most of the modems do
not need separate drivers, so they aren't being made. Also, I was not
sure what some of the settings should be for the modem. What should the
speed in numbers be set to? I could also try getting the win-modem to
work. I am not sure if that would be faster. It seemed impossible the last
time I tried. Are there any suggestions to get dial up working faster?
It's about 30 seconds to load some web pages.

Several possible reasons:

a) the serial port may be on a speed less
than 56K (check your /etc/serial.conf).

b) Windows was using compression on the ppp-connection;
try
modprobe ppp-deflate
and/or
modprobe bsd_comp
if they aren't loaded.

Cheers,
Tink

if you the connetion speed to something liek 46 k it will improve, thats what i had to do when i used a serial modem to connect via dialup.

You can see the modem number by querying the modem from modem configuration.
Most LINUX recognized US robotics types. (usually configured at ttys0)

I use Courier V everything (costs me 280US$).

Courier modem is the greatest modem among analog clone.

You can use modem booster(software) or tweaking the MTU (wich I dont know HOWTO do it).

Speed connection may vary due to propagation (Phone noise, spatter, spike etc) so I use V everything coz it has the best ECC capabilities.

It is often just a matter of how good the init string is (hardware compression...).

Init string is an extra AT command set for your modem.
You can find those command in your US robotics manual/command reference book.

It's for configuring how'd you like your modem to work/'behave'.

Anyway if you have 2 modem and 2 phone lines, you can have 'em bonded to achieve faster speed.

Contact your ISP for this service.

linux loads much much faster than windows on mine. i have tried us robotics and it sucks. i got an intel modem and have been extremely happy with it. i recommend getting an intel modem and using wvdial.
hope this helps

There are plenty of US Robotics types of modem, [V everything]Corporate modem is the best analog modem.(none can beat at this class of modem)

Instead of slow streams you can configure linux by Tweaking TCP/IP parameter.

You can use wvdial for earlier Kernell.

Have you disabled IPv6 in Firefox?

Type "about:config" in the address bar, and then do a search for "ipv6". Change the value to "true" to disable IPv6. That should speed up your browsing in firefox.
