You can use Gaim or Kopete to access MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger. XMMS is the Linux clone of Winamp. All of these (XMMS and Gaim for sure, Kopete maybe) should have been installed if you did a complete install of Slackware. If not, you can get these at LinuxPackages.

http://messenger.yahoo.com/messenger/download/unix.html

get yahoo msg from that link. very easy install and runs just fine on RH9 at least.

I use aMSN. They have a slack .tgz package at http://amsn.sourceforge.net/.

But GAIM is also very good. I just have a strange bug, which makes it close randomly. On Slackware, that is. If you get GAIM, build it from source.

Bamse

Amsn is even better than GAIM if you don't mind having several apps...

Amsn has the ability to display the pictures,etc... and very soon, the ability to use voice chat! Will also follow the Webcam :p

Then for me it's yahoo messenger from the yahoo website and aMSN :)

xmms is a clone of winamp <=2.5.
it's outdated, and a rip of a solid app, don't support it.
winamp released an alpha of a linux version of 3.x, but it's not very complete, and seems to have been abandoned.

for msn messenger, you'll have to go with kopete or gaim, i doubt microsoft has any intention of making a linux version ;)

I don't understand, "rip of a solid app". Do you mean you don't like it because it is a clone? So is aMSN, Gaim, Evolution (less and less with recent versions), and many other apps for Linux. XMMS isn't really outdated, just updates are slow because not much needs fixing. I keep it going all day at work with no problems at all.

xmms is outdated.
every media player for the last two years has included a media library.
it requires additional plugins for "free-form" skins.
a chat client isn't a rip because it uses an existing protocol, it's a rip if it's trying to look, act, and feel like another app.
i've only used evolution, but you're probably right about early versions, judging from their description.

For voice and WebCam support for yahoo messenger you can try gyach :
1. Download http://www.politicalcrossfire.com/te...nstall.tar.bz2 , and save it to your home directory (important!).

2. Run these commands in the terminal, in sequential order:
Code:

tar -xjf gyach-install.tar.bz2
cd gyach
sudo ./install
