How can I monitor tcp_max_syn_backlog?

Greetings,

I have a problem where certain web hosts are getting 3 second delays/SYN packet loss. I have configured the counter /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_max_syn_backlog, and I can see that this variable is set at what I expect. How can I monitor the SYN backlog in real time? If I have this sysctl property set at 2048...I can't figure out how to monitor what it is actually using on the system? Is using netstat -tan and counting instances of 'SYN_RECV' a good way? Any help is appreciated.
