how can i install a new version of glib on a fresh installed redhat8?

how can i install a new version of glib on a fresh installed redhat8?
i downloaded gtk2, and all its dependencies (and that includes glib)
the glib source was untarred, configured maked and make installed...
after that, i downloaded the latest version of gaim ..
untarred it and typed: ./configure
it has an error, it says a certain version of glib is needed (i just installed the latest glib from souce right) but how come my system still detects that the version of my glib is still the stock and old one? hmmmmmm
how can i make that the glib that i installed is the one and only glib that my system will use from now on?
i really need help.
thank you.
