How can I get xauth with startx?

i know XDM uses xauth to authenticate X sessions and it writes something called 'magic cookie' to ~/.Xauthority, but how can i get similar xauth authentication when starting X with startx from the command prompt? Is there something i need to add into ~/.xinitrc ?
