How can I get konqueror's media:/ to list hard drives by label instead of size?

Hello.

I'm using KDE 3.5.2 on Gentoo with kernel 2.6.16-gentoo-r7. When I go to media:/ in konqueror, it lists all my storage devices by size, rather than by mount point or label. I find this very confusing. Is there any way to change this behavior?

Also, some of my drives appear by some other random names. For example, /dev/hdc1, which is mounted on /mnt/hdc1, is listed as "/". /dev/hde1, mounted on /mnt/E, is listed as "?PNG[][]", where "[]" represents an empty rectangle character. The first one kind-of makes sense, since its drive label is "/" (being mounted as / on my Ubuntu installation), but the second one has a drive label of "PERSONAL"; what's with all the weird characters?

Hello.

I've fixed the problem. After using mtools to label /dev/hde1 (instructions below), I simply had to reboot. Now it shows the label properly.

How to use mtools to relabel a vfat partition (without reformatting):

1) install mtools (emerge mtools)
2) copy /etc/mtools/mtools.conf.example to /etc/mtools/mtools.conf (cp /etc/mtools/mtools.conf.example /etc/mtools/mtools.conf)
3) edit /etc/mtools/mtools.conf and add the following line:

drive e: file="/dev/hde1"

4) relabel the new drive (mlabel e:PERSONAL) (you can exchange "PERSONAL" for anything you want as long as it's 11 characters or less.)
5) check the new label (mlabel -s e

6) reboot
