I wouldn't try to install rpms on slackware - there isn't much point, especially for java. Why not get a version from:
ftp://sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch/mirror/java-linux/

First off. . . there is nothing wrong with installing RPMs in Slackware. Don't spread FUD. ;)
That's why Slack comes with the RPM program, and the rpm2tgz program (converts RPMs into .tgz files for easy installation.)


But what you have is a rpm.bin file. It extracts itself into an RPM file for installation.

What you want to do is download the other linux file provided by sun. . . it looks the same but does not have rpm in it's name.

Then as root just
chmod +x JavaInstallationFile.bin #whatever it is called. . .
./JavaInstallFile.bin

It will guide you through the setup and installation. . .

DUH......With Slackware it's best to compile anything from source!!
that way YOU know it's optimized for your own system!!!

Yah, I guess putting a ;) after fud would lighten things up. . . it was ment as a joke.

I would say, with Slackware, it's a bad idea to compile everything from source. . . I mean, the fu<k's the point of using a prebuilt package based distro if you are only going to compile things again. Gentoo has it's place for this. . . and there are other distros that do the same too. :p

And I never said they always work. . . I just said there is noting wrong with installing them if that is your option. If it works. .. great! If not, to bad, just keep looking elsewhere.

What's wrong with slackware-10.0/slackware/d/j2sdk-1_4_2_04-i586-3.tgz ? AFAIK, it contains the java runtime environment.

There is nothing wrong with it.

I guess we (or I) got cought up in the whole RPM on slackware thing. . . :rolleyes:
