How can I controll my dvd-rom in Linux

I am talking about the control of the way things are read. Normal DVD-roms/CD's read inside out, How can I get my linux dvd-rom to read Outside->In? I suppose code will have to be written on it. Anyone have any good starting points on how to have total control of a DVD-ROM reader?

Reason? So I can read my XBOX games on linux rather than ftp'ing from the xbox.

uhm... shot in the dark... look at the xbox linux distro's dvd handling driver code... copy / paste / port over to standard kernel. looking at xbox kernel code... that's where I'd start.

True words from a 'burgh man. was in the 'burgh this past weekend..great town.

I am not sure if the linux xbox actually takes control of the reader and allows games to be played. I will have to check that out, but I dont think you can play xbox games once linux has been installed on xbox.

that could be true... in which case (and again this is if no tools exist which would surprise me) I would just take the kernel code ... find the lines that position and progress the laser... and reverse em. couldn't be that hard.

... boston-boy.

Well, What i want to do is use my Linux-pc to read an XBOX game not my XBOX running linux. So wouldnt I be better off finding the linux kernel code that reads DVD's and reverse that?

I have never tried messing with this type of code before. Can anyone give me a hint on how I can control this. could I use perl to do this? I am fairly fluent in perl but never used it to act as firmware.

Thanks

Ive done some light kernel modding... I would recommend downloading a kernel source or copying the one already on your machine into a new /usr/src/linux-bruce type directory. then mod it... compile it and boot it... see what happens. Once you find the code for controlling the drive just play with the values and the code until you get a feel for what is doing what. There is usually pretty good comments but just in case there isn't just dump out print statements and try it out. most importantly have fun with it. You could also check the kernel mailing list and catch up on what has been going on with dvd-drive development.
