which one your BIOS configured to boot from? is it the scsi drive or ide one?

try using GRUB instead of LILO, here's /boot/grub/grub.conf sample config for your booting scheme (yours might differ):

default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(sd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
title Red Hat Linux 9
root (sd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-8NTFS ro root=LABEL=/
initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.20-8.img

to install GRUB, type "grub" at shell, then type:

grub > root (sd0,0)
grub > setup (sd0)

(sd0) will install GRUB at scsi's MBR, use (hd0) to install at ide's MBR

in BIOS i configured SCSI drive to boot linux
very first time i installed grub as boot loader but it was creating probelm in booting, some time system goes hang in booting, so that why i reinstall linux one moth ago witk lilo, was working fine.
i was just trying to add windwos xp in lilo (install on /dev/hda1)

is it better that if i download new version of grub, may solve some time hangup problem during booting.

thnaks for relpy

Your info you posted:

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda2 17G 3.9G 12G 26% /
/dev/sda1 99M 9.1M 85M 10% /boot
none 125M 0 125M 0% /dev/shm

Your /etc/lilo.conf file you posted:
prompt
timeout=50
default=redhat-9
boot=/dev/sda <-try changing this to /dev/sda1
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
message=/boot/message
linear

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-8
label=redhat-9
initrd=/boot/initrd-initrd-2.4.20-8.img
read-only
append="hdc=ide-scsi root=LABEL=/" <-try changing this to root=/dev/sda2

Try making those changes, run /sbin/lilo and reboot.

Troubleshoot with 1 Drive

Mobassir:

I note that you still have all variables in play. Try reducing the complexity of your troubleshooting problem.

1. If LILO is stuck on LI, we can assume there is a "drive geometry" issue that is giving it problems.

2. However, we know that your system booted from the RH loaded SCSI drive using LILO prior to your attempts to configure LILO to control the newer XP loaded IDE.

3. Therefore, try pulling the IDE out of your problem space, clean up LILO to original config, assuming just the one drive, and lets see if you can get the system to boot again.

4. THEN we can add the IDE drive and see if we can get to the second stage of your system's evolution -- the stage where you could use your BIOS config to boot using the SCSI, or the IDE.

5. THEN we are back at your starting point and can carefully edit and configure LILO to control both drives.

Just a suggestion as to how I'd untangle this if it were my knot.

Good luck!

Walt

Side question, as I am currently going through something similar: i had to reinstall windowsxp (used ntfs for /hda [xp drive, hd1 of 2]) and installing it killed my grub boot loader which was setup after my initial installation of xp a while back. so, i did a linux rescue, and could boot linux, but not xp! Now, i've formated /hda again to reinstall xp (and have done so) but again cannot boot into linux... i would rather not reinstall my rh9 system, but it may come down to that.

here's some info on my system:

Ok so that's my FSTAB :

LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
LABEL=/usr /usr ext3 defaults 1 2
/dev/hdb6 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
/dev/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c auto defaults
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/win_d auto defaults
/dev/hdb8 /mnt/win_e auto defaults
/dev/sda1 /mnt/flash auto noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0

and this is my fdisk:
Disk /dev/hda: 40.0 GB, 40027029504 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4866 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 4866 39086113+ c Win95 FAT32 (LBA)

Disk /dev/hdb: 80.0 GB, 80054059008 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9732 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdb1 * 1 1964 15775798+ c Win95 FAT32 (LBA)
/dev/hdb2 1965 9731 62388427+ f Win95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/hdb5 1965 2728 6136798+ 83 Linux
/dev/hdb6 2729 2791 506016 82 Linux swap
/dev/hdb7 2792 3824 8297541 83 Linux
/dev/hdb8 3825 9731 47447946 b Win95 FAT32

Ideas on either reinstalling or grub.conf'ing welcome!

My MBR, now, on /hda should be alright as it's been killed with my format and reinstall, so perhaps one of those grub install techniques might work, but i can't afford to play guessing games with my data- so a sort of more concrete answer would help!

Thanks for your time, effort and patience!
Jim

Do you know the actual partitions referenced by the LABEL tags in your /etc/fstab? It's impossible to tell what partition is / and which is /usr unless you, the system administrator, the one that installed the system knows.

Otherwise, you will just have to guess yourself and then try one way. If that doesn't work, then it must be the other, it would seem to me.
