Question honeyd: error while loading shared libraries: libdnet.1: cannot open shared object fi

When I try to run honeyd I get the following error:

honeyd: error while loading shared libraries: libdnet.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Its been 3 days and I've been unable to get past this error. I've tried symlinking the installed libdnet to /usr/lib, reinstalling everything on a clean system.

Help :-(

libdnet-1.11
libevent-1.3a
libpcap-0.9.8
arpd
honeyd-1.5c

GNU Linux x86_64

Lightbulb Unbelievable!

Just moments after posting my question I'm able to get it working! The solution was to copy create a libdnet.so.1.0.1 file.

- verify the location of your current libdnet: # locate libdnet
- the latest version (for me) was /usr/local/lib/libdnet.1.0.1
- create the .so version: cp /usr/local/lib/libdnet.1.0.1 /usr/local/lib/libdnet.so.1.0.1
- run ldconfig : # /sbin/ldconfig
- run # updatedb

Honeyd works now :-)

Same error with Snort on Ubuntu (Oneiric)

Hello Secbuddy

I had the same error when trying to run a fresh install of snort.

"locate libdnet" didn't tell me anything, but thanks to your post I found a file /usr/local/lib/libdnet.1.0.1

So I created the ~~.so.~~ file, did the stuff you said to update, and now I get a different error message when trying to start snort

So thanks for helping me move forward
