Home Sound Studio (part 2): Microphone set up problem

If you've read the Linux-based Sound Studio thread, this is sort of a parallel topic...

I am trying to set up a microphone in my computer, and have done nothing more than plug it into the red/pink socket, and (pardon my ignorance), what else do I need to do?

check your mixer settings, usually the mic defaults to muted.

By the way, I see you are using SuSE as well...

I'm assuming you meant this:

YaST->Hardware->Sound->Volume and then I set Mic to 5...Finish and tried recording again but nothing happened.

The way I'm trying to record is with the Audacity application (comes included with the SuSE distro), but no dice....

Could it be that my settings are correct and I'm simply failing during the recording action? Is there another way I can check if my Mic is working?

In adittion to the post above...I've checked some sites that suggest the use of these commands:

rec
wavrec

Apparently they are not installed by default in SuSE 8.1 (if they ever were), would anybody be familiar with either the alternatives to these commands or with the packages needed to use these commands?
