High Quality Streaming with Xine

Hi, sorry if this has been covered in another forum but I'm a relative newbie to all this! I am part of a radio station that streams online using a stream that is "optimised for windows media player 9" and as such when I stream it using Xine the bitrate is very low. In windows I could stream at about 128kbps and I was wondering if there is some way to stream a .asx file at a similar sort of bitrate using Xine or some other player. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Tom

Xine should be able to play at the same bitrate as WMP9 (as long as you've got the right codecs installed).

Could you post a link to the .asx file, and I'll see what bitrate I get?

The stream is at union.surrey.ac.uk/gu2live.asx. I think you might be right about the codecs but I dont know which ones are relavent to .asx files. Where can I find a set of up to date codecs for xine? Thanks for your help, I'm finding Linux to be superb compared to windows, except a few things prove tricky to get working!

Go into the Settings -> Setup -> GUI -> Configuration Experience Level. Set this to 'Master of the Known Universe'. Hit 'Apply'

Now go to the 'Media' tab. About 3/4 of the way down, there's an 'MMS Protocol' option. Change that to 'TCP'. Hit 'Apply'.

Enjoy your high bitrate radio.

Dave

P.S. Get the latest codecs from http://ftp3.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/ Grab the 'EssentialXXXXX.tar.bz2' package. Unpack it and put its contents into /usr/lib/win32 (you may have to create that directory yourself). Restart Xine and you're good to go.

No problem.

While we're plugging Uni radio stations, have a look at Glasgow Uni's (my old Uni, I graduated 2 years ago) radio station (ogg vorbis stream, no less!). It relaunches every year when they get their new broadcast license. They get to broadcast all over Glasgow, but only for a couple of months each year.

Take it easy.

Dave
