Hi I am trying to setup a mailserver with internet connection! HOWTO?

Hi, We have a small company with about 20-30 memebers and we are moving to a new office where we want our own dedicated mail server. Is there a recommended package for commercial deployment, we will probably be growing from out current size to about 100-150 people in about a years time and coule grow even bigger. I would want to start right so that I dont have to upgrade again. I am not a admin, but a developer since we dont have an admin, I will be performing their duties for now.

So my basic Q is how do I setup a linux server with a mail server good enough to grow to a size of 1000 users or more..

Can someone point me in the right direction or just give some pointers.

Is sendmail enough or you have get some other freely available mail severs?

Also what about http access, is there a package available for internet use.

Thanks..

Thanks for the reponse, I will try qmail or webmail...like u suggested, but whats the diff, why do you prefer qmail over sendmail? ease of use/setup or does it support larger number of users?

What i meant by that statement was that, I would like people to be able to access their accounts online, so is there a free web based client available for download that I can host at the same time with the mailserver..

Also do I need to do anything special once I have these setup for me to connect to the real world(internet).

Thanks
Ankur

postfix, courier, squirrrelmail

Hi

I would suggest postfix over sendmail. it is very flexible and easier to configure than sendmail.

Courier imap combined with squirrelmail works great for me, i am running a mailservice where people can connnect via imap, pop3 or http over squirrelmail.

I dont know about the scalabilty of courier though. some peolple say that you should go for cyrus for a really big userbase.

See this great howto on getting it running on gentoo, it pretty much applies for any distro i think.
