Help with xv-3.10a viewer

The "xv-3.10a" graphics viewer is causing my (Mandriva-2008, Kde-3.5.7, Kernel-2.6.23.1) X windows (version 1.3.0) to crash. It usually sends me back to the KDM login screen but sometimes it freezes the X window forcing me to power down & reboot. The only log message I can find that relates to this problem is:

kdm [3250] xserver for display:0 terminated unexpectedly

I have tried two different xv rpm packages & I even compiled the xv-3.10.tar.gz source using gcc-4.2.2 & gcc-2.96 but "xv" still keeps crashing my system. I also started X with both the "nvidia" & the "vesa" drivers to see if the crashes were driver related, but switching drivers doesn't make any difference either.

Something on my system doesn't like "xv". It lets me start the xv program & even load a .jpeg file but crashes my system when I try to do anything else with xv.

I know "xv" is a pretty old program but I like it & would appreciate any help with this problem. Thank you.

Did you try to use another WM instead of KDE to see what happens?
Also you can run xv through strace to see where it crashes:
Code:
strace xv
Regards

Yes, I tried icewm-light supplied by my Mandriva-2008 distribution last night & discovered that xv-3.10a works with that windows manager. Your suggestion is right on the money.

I still would like to run "xv" from KDE-3.5.7 & will try to run the "stance xv" cmd as you suggested. I never used the "strace" program though but I'll get it if I don't have it & give it a try.

Thank you for responding to this post
