help with the gimp

I would like to cut out a part of a picture and save it as a new file. How would I go about saving as the exact shape that I cut out. Now I only know how to save it on a square background.

A 'square' background is the only way to save an image in any image editor that I know of. Howver, you could save it on a transparent background to make it appear as if it's not square. Cut your image, and place it into a new image with a transparent background and save.

Thanks I will try that. I got a response from one person who uses photshop, he said their was a feature called trim, that would do what I needed.

If I save it on a tranparent backround, then upload it to a sight, will it appear non-square(you would think)?

Not all formats support transparency. Use PNG or GIF with transparency, and you should be fine.
