Help with tar ball

I have down loaded this program http://sourceforge.net/projects/jslideshow/ which comes as .tar.gz.

Can anyone help me install this?

Thx

tar zxvf <package.tar.gz>
cd package
read the README and the INSTALL file
./configure --help | less
./configure <optional_feature>...
make
sudo make install

What the ??

I opened a terminal and typed tar zxvf <slideshow2.tar.gz>

This worked and extracted the files (I think)to the directory I wanted. I then left the terminal and found the read me file which read Compile and run Jslideshow.java

Yeah that's easy to understand. Not? How do I compile Jslideshow.java

$ javac Jslideshow.java

But the INSTALL text file in the tarball may give much better and more useful instructions.

Thanks,

Its all to confusing and frustrating for me.

Alls I wanted was a program which creates DVD slides form photographs with transitions etc.

This program seemed perfect but to get it installed seems like you need a phisics degree.

Well, you could always run Windows and have no measure of control over your life (instead of just a little).

It is not an exaggeration to say that life is divided into those who expect to direct their own lives, and those who expect to be told what to do. The distinction between the two groups is based purely on choice, not natural forces. We choose which group we belong to.

Those who don't see it as a choice become victims of their own limited expectations.

Have a nice day.

Hmm not sure I understand this philosophy? I decided to move away from Windows so that I was not a prisoner where I saw society is heading with MS (Lack of choice). The kids home work being a classic example - can only be done on windows albeit I,m searching for alternatives in order to give them freedom of choice. My signature is testimony to my strive to explore and breach boundaries. Persistence can easily be exchanged for failure however alternative to MS and their advocates can and do on occasion set up an environment where persistence is not promoted
