help with .tar


how do you detar something without the .gz extension after the .tar, I know how to detar a tar.gz tar <name> xzvf. Help me please.

i'm not positive but i think tar -x will work also you can extract them using your GUI file manager by right clicking the tar archive

It's tar xvf <file_name>. The ' z ' option is for gunzipping a gzipped ( .gz ) tar file.

Why tar xf filename? Don't you like ' v ' ( verbose ) option?

at the command prompt, type:
man tar
