help with hooking up a microphone to Linux computer

I want to hook up the used microphone I have, which is a a Labtec AM-242 mic, ... to my computer with mepis 6.0 ... in order to record voices, then burn them to CD.

I plugged the mic into the mother board. and that is as far as I have gotten...what steps are next?
Lead me by the hand please, as I have only been using Linux for two months, I am not campletly familiar yet, with Mepis as I was with windows. I am liking mepis more and more each time I use my computer!
I await your replies,
Flywelder

run "kmix". It is a nice mixer It will show you the mic. check it is not in mute. Increase the mic volume and record.

My reply

Thanls for responding!
let me ask you another question please,
I now have a green light under the microphone and all others are dark. the volume slide is all the way up.

I spoke into the mic and hear nothing from the computer's speakers.
Do I need to do anything in the "output" tab?

If you need to know about my sound card.....I have a creative sound card, but that is all I know about the sound card. How can i found out more?

The microphone has two volumes - a "record" volume, and a "playback" volume. It seems as though you've maximized the record volume, but on the output tab you have to make sure the microphone isn't muted and that the volume is up.

If you just want to record to disk then the microphone output can be muted, you don't have to be able to hear it for it to be recorded.
