Actually, now that I play with the cube I can tell that those pictures were probably taken in mid-rotation. You can't actually have the entire cube, sitting in the skydome visible without rotating, can you?

To get the skydome effect you need to first set a background image.
Then you need to "square off" the cube by enabling cube caps in ccms. I think it only accepts .png image files, so if there are any images you'd like to use convert them in the Gimp to .png first.
I have to admit that the interface is a bit clumsy at this stage, for there are still a few bugs in ccms, but persevere.
Compiz is great, but the next step should be an effects preview box.
