Question Help w/ TripWire install over the network

Hello Everyone,

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Nichole from Wash DC. I just got blessed with a new security gig in downtown dc. My background is mostly servers and lil networking I've been in the industry for about 6+ years. But nothing like I am doing now. Which why I am so excited about this new job. Because it opens doors for me, the company that hired me is willing to teach and me to grow professionally. So who could ask for more?!

I've worked with Linux before in the past on the server-side (locally) and had some classes, needless to say I am rusty. Most of you know if you don't work with certain OS's for awhile you sure will lose it.

My question is, how do I install an application from my desktop. I have root access to the server. The file name is install-linux.bin.

Thanks!

Welcome to LQ!

In general, installation files tend to be run from the console (however, some distros let you double click on a desktop icon). Just check that the file is executable (and make it executable using chmod if it isn't) and then just run the file: ./install-linux.bin.

That should start the installation program.

Ok that part I understand. My thing is I have the software locally (WinXP Pro) but the server is in another location with no GUI...straight command line. I am using putty to connect.

Thannks for the "Welcome to LQ!"

A couple of options:

If the install program can run from the command line, then you have no problems, it should just go using SSH.

However, if the installer requires a graphical environment, then you have a couple of ways of doing things. The first approach would be to install a VNC server on the remote box. That way you could tunnel VNC across your SSH connection and have a VNC client on your Windows box and get your graphical environment. The other approach would be to install an X server on your Windows box like Cygwin. Then you could forward X from the remote machine through SSH and the Windows box would take care of handling the graphics.

Of the two approachs, I think the VNC way would be easier, but it may depend on having an install of X on the remote box. I've never tried installing VNC on a box that didn't have X installed, so I don't know if you can install it without X.

I understand now, I used a windows programs winscp (?) to copy the file over to the linux server. Then I can run it from there by logging in with putty?

Thank you so much for helping me out.

After all that, I found out that my co-worker created the root partition too small (under 2G) so the server has to be reinstalled.

Thanks again Hangdog42 whenever you come downtown Starbucks on me.

Good learning experience tho'.
