Help! VMware Problem, SVGA + Windows
 

hi all,
i run a compaq M700 800mhz 384 mb debian sid 2.6.7 box recently installed vmware to host xp, when xp is on there vmware added a "SVGA controller" device of something or other that required VMware tools as the driver (under device manager), and after I uninstalled to because the performance of xp under my specs were terrible, the console screen is now taking up the whole screen as opposed to just a small box at the center of the screen.

my problem is: for working with windows-only commercial software reasons, I now have to reinstall windows xp, the windows xp prof cd will not boot, perhaps due to this SVGA controller device and the fact that my console screen is bigger than before. So now that I've removed vmware with vmware-uninstall.pl, how do i get rid of this controller from my computer?

VMware creates virtual machines with virtual hardware. So the SVGA controller you mentioned is not real. VMware emulated it with software for your guest OS to use. It doesn't exist on your real machine. It can't have anything to do with your CD not booting. Maybe your boot CD is damaged.

but, without ever changing my lilo configurations

my computer now boots in a console window that take up the whole screen, as opposed to only the center of the screen. And there has been no changes in my computer except removing vmware.

i had vga=normal on lilo, so what's considered normal for the computer have definitely changed. how do i change this normality back?
