I just installed Suse9.3 on my system, and I want to upgrade firefox to 1.0.6. Unfortunately, I downloaded the files but have no idea where to install it to! Answers?

What files? From Mozilla homepage? RPM's for SuSE? Source Code?. Read this:

Use YAST to update your installation with YAST Online Update (YOU).
I have MozillaFirefox-1.0.6-4.1 installed and have only used YOU.
You don't need to know where to install the files --
It's taken care of by the package manager and YAST.

LinuxVB is right. YOU should be the best thing to update stuff. Still, if you want to install it manually, I like to keep my programs installed at /usr/local, /usr/local/share or /opt. Depends of the application. In the case of Firefox, I would put it at /usr/local/share so all users can execute that application. Indeed, if you want to install at your /home/ you can, I just found it awkward

/usr/share (and /usr/local/share) is not for installing packages like Firefox. Its for read-only architecture independent data files according to this link.

The 2 best methods for installing firefox in Suse 9.2 are through YAST, first install the old version on your dvd, then go into yast updates to download and install the new version over it, the second way is to download firefox straight from mozilla (easiest to download the installer version) when you get it, just open up the tarball and double click the file that is called mozilla, this will open a graphical installer, then all you need to do is decide where you want to install it, I usually just install it in my home folder, and thats that.

happy surfing

Cool explanation, but you've lost me ^_^. Isn't Firefox a read-only package? (I mean, the executable, the user files are always stored at ~/.firefox or mozilla, whatever). Also, a lot of applications, when compiled without explicit path arguments will go to /usr/local (mplayer does, doesn't it?). If you can clarify, I'd love to hear it ^_^.

The firefox executable is actually located in the main Firefox directory. I agree with you that most locally compiled apps go into /usr/local, but you will notice that non of them place anything executable in /usr/local/share, only support files such as icons, man pages, other documentation and some config files. The only exception, I have seen to this rule is with games, which can be installed into /usr/share/games or /usr/local/share/games. Anyway, on a personal computer you can obviously install packages wherever you want, but I just thought you would find that article useful.

Now I understand and agree. Executables are not really at /usr/local/<whatever>. Thanks for the explanation reddazz
