help me run fsck on my fedora6

Hi all I have been having issues on my fed6 computer (locking up) and wish to run fsck on the main file system. I do have another computer that I just installed fed6 on which is running fine...anyway I tried using the linux live cd on my faulty computer but I could not figure out how to become root...how can I run fsck on my main file system (actually on all my filesystems). My book says it must be unmounted but how do I unmount the darn thing and still be able to use the fsck command? thanks in advance...
