it's a hardware

To start off with, it's not a software modem. Software modems are typically of two types:
1. PCI cards that com on cheap desktops.
2. Ones that are hardwired onto laptops, they are built in.
Yours is a PC Card, which although it is technically a hardware modem in it's function, you will need to install PCMCIA services in order to use it. This is pretty straightforward in most installations.
Then you will need the drivers for it. Look for PCMCIA drivers, and for your chipset driver. If you don't know what chipset it has, contact the vendor. BTW this should all auto-detect on most current distros.

does it look like this? http://www.rightbird.com.hk/images/modem/P5614c.gif
it should work as long as your pcmcia is configured properly.

does the laptop beep when you remove or install the card? if so than you should be ready to go. insert the card and use kppp, wvdail or rp3 to configure your dial up account.
