No, it's not possible to jump that many versions without problems. Back up your data, and do a fresh install of FC17. And it will take as much time as it takes...no way for us to know that, since it depends on installation method, speed of your machine, disk, etc.
You may want to wait till January 1st for Fedora 18 to be released unless you don't mind reinstalling/upgrading again. The recommended way of upgrading is to get the download the DVD iso and burn it, and let anaconda upgrade it. I've been told that the other ways upgrading may work but are not the ideal way of doing it. I had been asking some of the same questions because I plan to upgrade 16 -> 17.
