Help Me!!

Hi All,
I'm using FC9(fedora core 9) and sing fluxbox.I tried to install Xen but couldn't. After googling for some time I found that FC9 does not support Xen , so I decided to install virtalbox, I downloaded the rpm and tried to install it but found some error mssgs saying that its not able to compile the kernel....can nyone plz point me to some links where I can get the detial information on how to install virtualbox on FC9 and make it run properly.

Since it didn't work I tried to downgrade my kernel(now its 2.6.25-x) to 2.6.23-x so that I can install Xen as its now supported by FC9, I donwloaded a vanilla kernel(2.6.23-x) from kernel.org and did the config and durning compilation it gave some error after around 30 mins and come out.

Solving nyone of these will solve my problem, but as m learning all these stuffs I would like some pointers on the secodn prob also so that i can learn how to upgrade/downgrade the kernel.

Kenel version is (uname -a):
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.25-14.fc9.i686 #1 SMP Thu May 1 06:28:41 EDT 2008 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

My system config is as below(cat /proc/cpuinfo):
processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 15
model : 2
model name : Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz

cache size : 128 KB
fdiv_bug : no
hlt_bug : no
f00f_bug : no
coma_bug : no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 2
wp : yes
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe up pebs bts cid xtpr

You need to have your kernel-source available for VirtualBox to compile against. Make sure you add the source that matches the kernel you are currently running.

It would be better if you installed VirtualBox from your repository using your package manager, it should resolve any dependancy issues automatically.

Please use better thread titles in future, i.e. ones that describe the problem you're having. You are told that titles like "Help Me!!" are bad when you post a thread..

To install VirtualBox from a .rpm you need to have your kernel-sources added i.e. if your current kernel is 2.6.25-14.fc9.i686 you need to add the kernel-source that matches that kernel version. Again this should be available via your package manager. Do a search for kernel-source.

I had a quick look around, try typing (as root) yum install virtualbox

Fedora 9 : the package 'kernel-devel' will do.
('yum install kernel-devel')

Virtual Box : try this (special version? with
usb support)
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads
A Fedora 9 version is included, and it will make
the kernel module during install.
Just follow the instructions. (If any, it went so
fast and smooth, when I installed (not on Fedora 9)
so I do not remember the procedure.)

Regards

Try this : move the package to /home/harry2006
and please do command in a terminal window :

1) su
2) rpm -iv Virtualbox-2.0.2_36488...rpm
(if i386) ... like this :
Quote:
[root@localhost]# rpm -iv VirtualBox-2.0.2_36488_fedora9-1.i386.rpm
Preparing package til installation...
VirtualBox-2.0.2_36488_fedora9-1

Creating group 'vboxusers'. VM users must be member of that group!

No precompiled module for this kernel found -- trying to build one. Messages
emitted during module compilation will be logged to /var/log/vbox-install.log.

Success!
The install works in Gnome, not in KDE4.
Remember to add yourself to the group 'vboxusers'

Good Luck !
