Help installing TeTeX. GCC issue?

I unzipped tetex-src-3.0.tar.gz into /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.

I ran ./configure as root and the error came up as:

Code:
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C++ compiler cannot create executables.
What is the problem?

I suspect the problem is that you didn't inspect the directory contents after unpacking the tarball, and throughly reading the README and INSTALL files before trying to install.

OK, so I decided that since it's a Friday, I'm going to try the daunting task of a newb installing LaTeX by source.

I read the INSTALL and followed the steps.

When I did make install in /usr/local/src/tetex-src-3.0, I got a series of errors:

Code:
mv: cannot stat `.deps/getopt.Tpo': No such file or directory
make[3]: *** [getopt.o] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/src/tetex-src-3.0/utils/texinfo/lib'
make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/src/tetex-src-3.0/utils/texinfo'
make[1]: *** [all] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/src/tetex-src-3.0/utils/texinfo'
make: *** [all] Error 1
I have GCC, G++, make, flex, and bison. The reason why I failed last time is because I only had GCC and make.

What did I do wrong this time?
