OK tried this..

phpize
Configuring for:
PHP Api Version: 20041225
Zend Module Api No: 20060613
Zend Extension Api No: 220060519

make
Build complete.
Don't forget to run 'make test'.

Tried make test:

> make test
/bin/sh /root/eaccelerator-0.9.5/libtool --mode=install cp ./eaccelerator.la /root/eaccelerator-0.9.5/modules
cp ./.libs/eaccelerator.so /root/eaccelerator-0.9.5/modules/eaccelerator.so
cp ./.libs/eaccelerator.lai /root/eaccelerator-0.9.5/modules/eaccelerator.la
PATH="$PATH:/sbin" ldconfig -n /root/eaccelerator-0.9.5/modules
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Libraries have been installed in:
/root/eaccelerator-0.9.5/modules

If you ever happen to want to link against installed libraries
in a given directory, LIBDIR, you must either use libtool, and
specify the full pathname of the library, or use the `-LLIBDIR'
flag during linking and do at least one of the following:
- add LIBDIR to the `LD_LIBRARY_PATH' environment variable
during execution
- add LIBDIR to the `LD_RUN_PATH' environment variable
during linking
- use the `-Wl,--rpath -Wl,LIBDIR' linker flag
- have your system administrator add LIBDIR to `/etc/ld.so.conf'

See any operating system documentation about shared libraries for
more information, such as the ld(1) and ld.so(8) manual pages.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Build complete.
Don't forget to run 'make test'.

ERROR: Cannot run tests without CLI sapi.

make install
> make install
Installing shared extensions: /usr/lib/php5/20060613+lfs/

Re-started apache, test page result:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function eaccelerator() in /var/www/test.php on line 1

Tried changing the line in php.ini from extension=”eaccelerator.so” to zend_extension="/usr/lib/php5/20060613+lfs/eaccelerator.so"

Clutching at straws now!

Re-started apache, test page result:

Had to surrender!

Thanks for all your advice and help, it is greatly appreciated.
I couldn't take any more grief!

I just used the package manager to install xcache, Job done!

I would still want to know how to install eaccelerator, but I won't lose any sleep over it!

Thanks again for you help.
