help in fvwm

ok, can someone give me a good rundowm on how the shape thing works?, i cant seem to get it working with xpm files (black and white, i was under the impression that black would mark where the window gets see thru ..... but it wont do anything) .... also can it be setup to only shape certain parts of windows?, like make the corners (the ones marked by handles) stick out more? ... it seems the only options are tiling, or stretch the image (which sounds like it might shape wrong parts of the window on various sized windows.

also as a side question ... is there a way to pass commands to fvwm while its running, from a external program (i want to use a different program to handle certain hotkeys, but there needs to be a way to allow the program to tell fvwm to run a command
