Ok, so I had an issue with Ubuntu-XP dual-boot because of Norton Goback's proprietry way of dealing with the WinXP partition. See:

I thought I had the issue resolved by changing back the partiton type of the NTFS partition to 7. But it wasn't really as easy as I'd thought. After reverting the partition type, I was able to login back into my C drive(i.e winxp install drive). But I'd originally created an extended partition and logical drives J,K,L within it amounting to about 170Gb, and I don't see any of them.

When I use the Xp's native disk manager, I see the C drive as 30 Gb and the entire partition as 200 Gb but don't see the other drives nor do I see the 170Gb as free space within which I can recreate those (they were mostly empty).

Any pointers on what I can do to be able to see those partitions?

Sounds like Goback wentback to a state before you created the partitions. Hate to say it, but you probably need to create them again.

For one...Windows will never recognize a linux partition. Linux can see a windows partion, but not vice versa. How important is the data you have on the drives? I would say do a clean install.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. The partition was an extended partition - NTFS. I have 200 GB for WinXP and I created a 30 GB primary partition with WinXP on it and an extended partition with J,K,L drives to account for the rest 170 GB. The problem is not just that I can't see the extended partition or logical drives - the problem is I can't even see the 170Gb as free space. At least, not in WinXP's disk manager.
Another note: when I rebooted into Windows for the first time after reverting back the partition type, I saw chkdisk (or whatever) complain about file inconsistensies and it went ahead and "fixed" them. Guess I should've aborted it from running.

I am confused--what is on this machine? Just Windows?
What does the partition manager tell you about the disk? (Rt-click My computer, select manage, then storage-->diskmanagement)

Ok I will try to describe the situation again in the most clear manner I can. The second part of your question is at the end.

I originally had a WinXp system with the following configuration.

Primary Partition [30 GB]
--> Logical drive C - WinXP install (NTFS)
Extended Partition [170 GB]
--> Logical drive J - Data (NTFS)
--> Logical drive K - Dev (NTFS)
--> Logical drive L - Multimedia (NTFS)
Free space [30 GB]

I had Norton Goback on there too which I later found out I should've uninstalled to save me quite a lot of grief.

Anyways, I then installed Ubuntu in the free space and set Grub/lilo to be the boot manager.

Well, after the Ubuntu install, I can't get into WinXP anymore. Thanks to a solution suggested by the wonderful folks on this forum, I was able to login back into XP (for details, follow above mentioned link but basically I set the partitiontype for WinXP to NTFS from 044).

So now I can log back in. But I can't see J,K,L anymore.

What do I see in WinXP disk mgr:

I just see drive C of type NTFS with 30 GB and all the Linux drives. The partition containing the C drive shows as 30 GB in the listing view but in the diskwise pictoral view below, it shows to be a 200 GB primary partition (which conflicts with the above configuration I detailed which had an extended partition). In Win Explorer too, drive C shows up as 30 GB. I have no problem recreating the logical drives but atleast in Windows Disk Manager, I don't see the missing 170GB at all - its as if the space just got gobbled up.

I'll try to see if I can post an screen image here if I can figure out how to do it.

Here's a screen dump of the Windows Disk Mgr. Note that Disk 0 shows the Winxp C drive as 30 GB in the listing and down in the pictoral view, it shows the drive and partition as 209 GB. I don't see the other drives J,K,L in that view and also Windows Explorer shows C drive to be 30 GB so all that other space just vanished into Bill Gates's rearend hole, I guess.

(Disk 1 is not relevant at the moment)

The picture is cut off--at least on my browser. There do seem to be a bunch of partitions of type "unknown"--when Windows sees things like Linux it just marks them unknown--but they will not show up as useable (empty space).

Can you get a Linux "live CD"? If so, boot from that, and run fdisk -l This will give a much better picture.

If you do not have valuable data on your "lost" partitions, i would consider simply wiping the disk and reinstalling---this often faster than trying to figure out what happened.

If you want to get Linux running somehow, we can give you other tricks for hunting down the issue.

Yes, I know the pic is cutoff a bit to the right - I loaded a lowres image because if I load a higher resolution image on Yahoo Photos, they just resize it to a smaller version which renders it unreadable. Anyways, the important stuff is still showing viz that my Winxp drive is 30 gb and the extended partition and the logical drives on it don't show up. And for some reason, the Winxp partition seems to take up 210 Gb of which only 30Gb is on the logical drive so the remainder has just vanished i.e become inaccessible.

As of now, I don't have an issue with the Ubuntu installation per se. My immediate objective is to be able to use the 170gb space on the HD which is there but not showing up as usable.
If you folks can suggest any way to recover the remainder space w/o reinstalling Winxp, that would be great.
