Help a newbie!! KDE 3.2 for Debian (Woody)
Ok, I'm new to Debian... so bear with me...
I'm trying to get KDE 3.2 working. I added the path to the download to the list... and ran apt-get. It downloaded a bunch of files and it said it unpacked them and such... but... When I run startkde, it says the command is not found. I searched in a ton of directories including /usr/bin and /usr/local/bin and can't find it. Where is it supposed to be? How can I be totally sure that KDE 3.2 installed correctly? If I were to download the .deb files from the http path, how can I install them manually?? Also, what files do I need it edit (and with what) so that startx loads KDE? |
There's a symlink in /etc/alternatives called "x-window-manager". Wherever it points to is what will get loaded. Delete it and make sure it points to /usr/bin/kde.

Well.. Now this is all a mess...
For my network connection to work, I have to login to a websense server which pops up when going to a web page and creates a cookie... I can't log on to this from the Linux Console... so internet won't work to download KDE now... SO... how can I download the entire KDE tree and use apt-get locally?? I suppose the last resort is the KDE source... but that'll take a good chunk of time... Thanks! |
I'm not sure how we got on to this. Is this related to your previous post or is this new?

well.. somehow I don't think KDE installed correctly when I did it the first time... although it gave me no errors... I never did find any way to get KDE started...
I'm now trying to find a way to reinstall it... without an internet connection... |
Did what I suggested not work?
