I'm not sure what your question is... are you asking for a video player that can play .dat files?

I'm not familiar with a .dat video format. As far as I know, mplayer has the widest amount of support for video formats - if mplayer won't play it, I doubt anything else in Linux will do it.

playing dat files in linux is very simple. just rename it to *.mpg and it should play in any player. well it worked for me besides dat is nothing but a modified mpg file that corresponds to some orange book specification.

usually a *.dat file, if you're sure the media is video, is for vcd. in xine, you could try the vcd button. usually it's just easier to mount your media and right click on the *.dat file and open it with xine (or mplayer). xine and mplayer should be able to handle vcd's with no problems.

as far as choppy video playback goes, make sure you enabled dma for your dvd/cd player and hard drive. your media player software may be using the wrong video drivers also, so play around with that in the xine or mplayer's preferences.

to enable dma, do a man hdparm. the basic command might look like:

hdparm -d1 /dev/hda

or

hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc

/dev/hda is your hard drive while /dev/hdc maybe your dvd/cd player.
