There are codecs available (or were available), after a lot of hassle I gave up. Now I avoid having it installed. Always prefered mplayer anyway...
It's something to do with licensing, so they've had to stop support. So some packages claim the mp3 support is there, but it still won't play them. I did some searches with yum, which gave me some links, but still no avail. Use mplayer!
