HEEEELLLP!!! Can't Print in OpenOffice... All other print fine!!!

I've spent about 16 hours researching and can't find help... Using "Edgy"... All updates... ALL apps print fine on Canon ip2200. None of the Koffice or OpenOffice apps print. When I go to "print setup" in Writer/Calc/Base, it recognizes name of my printer. Previews fine and when I click "print" it appears that it sent it but nothing happens. I printed a test page from "spadmin" with no problem. The printer icon in Writer/Calc/Base all have a lightning-bolt through it (no link ?). PLEASE HELP!!!! SAVE ME FROM CONSIDERING WINDOWS EVER AGAIN!!! Thank you in advance for any help.

Thanks for that link... It didn't help. I just spent about an hour trying every possible combination in the Print setup menu and nothing changed. In "Help" it says to go and set up "templates" and there is an option to setup Printer for templates. I did this IN OO... AND IT PRINTED MY "TEMPLATES" SETUP in Writer. Then I just opened a Writer new doc... typed some gibberish and tried to print. NOTHING. "Sending to printer" pops up for a second... then back to "ready". No print. There is still that lightning bolt looking thing on my "print" button. Should that be there? Thanks for even trying to help me. I have no clue where to go from here.

Not used OpenOffice so not sure what the lighting bolt means. Does the docs mention what it means?

Can you open your cups server and select your printer and do a test page from it. http://localhost:631

I am using 2.0.3 (you should upgrade to 2.1 if you cn. However:

1. Both KOffice and OpenOffice have the problem?

2. Go to Tools -- OPTIONS and check your printer settings in OpenOffice. Are you printing to a file and not to a printer?

3.Also check Tools -- CUSTOMIZE. Under the Menus tab there are selections for printers. Check things there.

4. Check Tools -- OPTIONS -- is there a path listed for your printer? There may not need to be, but check. If there is, is it the right printer?

Finally: Were you having problems before in using OOo and that printer? If not, what changed between then and now? A new installation of something? New hardware?

Let us know.

You said Koffice and OpenOffice do not print

In what application(s) DOES printing work correctly?

If you installed the binary version of OpenOffice, download the source code of OpenOffice and compile it with out -fomit-frame-pointer and not go any higher than -O2. This will give you more information while figuring out the problem at a cost of more memory usage.

Type visit localhost:631 using the web browser and look through the history of all jobs. Probably it may give you some hints. Though, if CUPS is not responding, I suggest restarting CUPS and see if that works. Set CUPS LogLevel to debug or debug2. Check CUPS logs.

http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/O...se/PrintingFAQ

Note:
CUPS puts customized PPD file(s) in /etc/cups/ppd, so use this file that relates to your printer instead of the PPD file that is located in /usr/lib/cups/model. Whatever you set as defaults through CUPS interface or lpoptions will change the PPD file in /etc/cups/ppd.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR THE HELP AND IDEAS.... CUPS prints fine. KDE print setup recognizes the printer and prints tests fine. All other apps print fine. Kontact, evolution, gimp, web, pdfs... all except Koffice / OpenOffice. So, using Synaptic, I un-installed Koffice/OpenOffice and re-installed Koffice and OpenOffice 2.1. In OO, still nothing. In Koffice, when I open Kspeard on its own (from Kmenu) and open a simple file... no print. When I open "Koffice Workspace Office Suite" and open the same exact Kspread file through it... IT PRINTS. Open Kspread on it's own again, same file.. no print. None of the other Koffice apps print. If you guys have any more suggestions, I'd really appreciate them. Otherwise, I'm about to format the HDD and start installing apps one-by-one, starting with the printer and try to pin-point where it hangs up. Again... thank you all for your help. GOOO LINUUUUUUUX. I love it in spite of my troubles.

Before you uninstall/reinstall everything, tell us what ideas/solutions people at the help forums at www.openoffice.org told you. We might be able to triangulate from there.

Make sure you post to them that you are using Linux, and what distro and version you are using.

Not much help from OpenOffice forum. Lots of people looked at it but 1 or 2 replies. I posted on 4 other forums as well and I get people telling me that they had the same problem but not many telling me what they did about it. So... off I go re-installing. It will only take a few hours and I'll test along the way. I'll post what I find. May be I can help others who had the same problem.

Probably its a line that is commented in the following files under /etc/cups
mime.types
mime.convs
pstoraster.convs

Another problem that could be happening behind the scenes is PPD file corruption. Try upgrading CUPS.

Third it could be your OpenOffice config for your account. Move the directory some where else and try again. Same goes for Koffice.

Did you try Abiword?

I guess you have not yet change LogLevel to debug or to debug2. If you have not, that is your problem not mine. We only can help you if you provide more information such as steps you took to setup the printer and any miscellaneous steps.

BTW, the same problem happened to me when using Mandrake 9.0 with an Epson Stylus Color 500. I suggest restarting CUPS or rebooting the computer. It is actually a software problem, so troubleshooting it will take a long time to come to the answer. Rarely a problem is fixed when doing a clean re-installation of Linux.

OpenOffice STILL won't print... all other apps print fine.

Here's what I did since my last post...
1. Format hard drive and clean re-install Kubuntu 6.10 (Edgy)
2. Installed Automatix and Synaptic and got all updates
3. Installed Canon ip2200 printer and tested it ...
. . . . Korganizer: PRINTS fine
. . . . Kate: PRINTS fine
. . . . Adobe Reader: PRINTS pdfs fine
. . . . Gimp: PRINTS images fine
4. Installed OpenOffice 2.1. In "KMenu > Office > Printer Administration... OpenOffice recognizes my printer and PRINTS TEST PAGE perfectly. When I open any Office program (Writer / Calc / Base)individually... NONE OF THEM PRINT ?!?!?!?!?

I've tried every single thing you guys have suggested so far and nothing has worked... EXCEPT...I am not sure how to move installation destination of a program. I just converted OpenOffice .rpms to .debs using alien and right-clicked on each icon to "Install" and it just installed itself where it decided.

What type of logs can I provide that would help you guys see where the problem might be? Please keep in mind that I'm a newbie when giving me instructions on what you need. Thanks for trying.

Also... ELECTRO...

Not sure what... "Probably its a line that is commented in the following files under /etc/cups
mime.types
mime.convs
pstoraster.convs............ means...

But if "commented" means there is a "#" in front of the line... then there are a lot of lines with # in front of them. How's that for newbie talk

Is there anything I could try and change in those files?... Thanks

Are you installing them from precompiled packages like from yum or apt?
I would uninstall them and then install from their source code. Maybe there is an issue with the precompiled packages.

I'M ON TO SOMETHING

I borrowed someone's brother mfc210c, installed it and IT PRINTS EVERYTHING. All Linux apps, INCLUDING openoffice.

The original printer I've been having trouble with - Canon IP1600 - using a driver for CanonIP2200 (as per several "how-tos") is still having the same problem. Prints ALL linux apps, EXCEPT openoffice.

So... is that a driver issue?
