having trouble with terminal for installing

i am new to Linux and recently installed UBUNTU on my laptop. i am currently trying to get some of the programs and tools i need on my computer and installed, but i cant figure out how. i have read a lot of articles about the terminal being where to install items such as drivers ect... but when i run the command lines, my terminal says stuff like "command not found" or "file does not exist." right now i just want to install a linux wacom driver, so i downloaded it and followed the on-site instructions (http://linuxwacom.sourceforge.net/in...howto/download) but every command i try to execute turns up with error messages. i would like to know if i am doing something wrong or if i need to start somewhere else in the terminal. when i type "cd" it seems like i am at the home directory, so i dont know.

First thing to do would be to try the instructions on the Ubuntu website.

i dont think i did it right. everthing was working fine until it said to "gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf", well, i did that, a blank file opens, and it says, in step 9 'Place the following lines near the beginning of the file. If you have a touchpad, make sure you place these lines before the "Synaptics Touchpad" Section.' well, it's blank. then, step 10 is more confusing. it says "Find the section that looks somewhat like this. It will be near the end of the file." THE FILE IS BLANK. there is no end, there is no section that even remotely resembles that. i need to know what is wrong here.

yea, nevermind. i typed something wrong. i decided to copy/paste the entire thing section by section and now my tablet works. one think that didn't work, however was the scroll ability on the pen. maybe it is just not supported as yet. and i was also kinda wondering about the four function keys on the tablet itself. is there somewhere i can program those or is that also not supported? thanks for the help, tho.
