having problem with syslogd
 

1. You are an administrator at a small company that is currently developing a network-based application. The programmers have come to you and asked that you setup syslogd so that it will monitor the application. Note - You have set aside local6 as the facility.
1) What file will you modify to get syslogd to pay attention to the applications log requests?
2) The developers want the following to occur
debug messages go to:
· /local/project23/log/debug.log
· notice, info, warning messages go to /local/project23/log/message.log
· crit and alert messages go to /local/project23/log/crit.log and to the screen of bobl, nancy, and Kenya if they are logged in.

3) Once you configured syslogd, what do you do to have the daemon read its config file?
4) The developers want you to automate the backup and compression of the logs found in /local/project23/log/ to /local/project23/archive. So you have decided to write a shell script and use cron. Here are the requirements:
· Every Saturday morning at 1:00am the script should be run
· Archive all log files in /local/project23/log/
· Compress the archive
· Move the archive to /local/project23/archive
· zero out the current log files

Is this homework? Plus you posted in the wrong forum.

If its homework, I'd suggest not asking. Members here will not answer questions that come off as doing the work your suppose to do yourself. We don't cheat, we just help in finding the answer, without giving it out.

PS. I did mention that in the future, if your asking questions, try to refrain from making them appear as they are questions directly from a test, book, homework or the such. This is for any member who uses this site.

LQ.org will not tolerate answering questions and doing homework on anyone's behalf. That's the whole point of homework, tests or the such, for you to find your own given answer.

I don't see the point of NOT doing anybodies homework. If there is somebody needing help and has no clue how to approach the problem, then why not do it for him.
whenever I have a problem to solve, I go to the net to find a solution, this includes asking questions. So I google around and find mostly similar solutions - then I simply adjust them to my needs.

to kanette:
you might want to replace syslogd with syslog-ng (http://www.balabit.hu/downloads/syslog-ng/ you need libol too, also available under that address). with syslog-ng you can match certain strings coming from all kinds of sources (usually /proc/kmsg) and start other appropriate programs warning you or what ever... syslog-ng also listens to the network and receives messages from allover the network. you can customize all different destinations for different logs... (usertty, or upd(192.168.2.13))

Then ask yourself, what is the point of the homework then, or taking a test then? That is what teaches them how to do their own work, research and find. Not everyone knows the answer, but with a little reading and searching, they will find their answer, also learning the process to find that answer.

If a teacher asks you to do something, that doesn't mean you turn to your classmate and ask them for the answer, that is along the same lines here. We don't tolerate doing others homework, that's their work and they need to find the answer. It prepares them for their future. What good would or purpose would anybody be if they couldn't do anything on their own.

That's it. No more discussion regarding homework. If you feel like arguing about it, email me. But other than that, abide by our requests not to do others homework or answer questions off tests, quizzes, etc. That is called CHEATING, look it up if you don't know the meaning.

OK, I read your kind reminder of what homework is, and I feel like telling you that I know what you mean. but there is no reason for you to react so very unfriendly. this is a helping community. I doubt that people here like to hear you nagging about posts instead of actually helping them. you could have pointed kanette in the right direction yourself, but instead you declared this post as 'homework' and didn't help a bit.

maybe I'm a little bit too liberal, but unlike you I tried helping. please think about the way you treat people here. I doubt you would like to be treated that way.

oh and by the way, the rules don't state anything about "doing somebody else's homework".

I'm quite blunt myself and don't care what people think in most cases. I don't take things too personally on a forum. If you only saw this persons reaction in an email sent, well then, nuff said.

But I could have sworn that I asked for emails beyond my last post regarding discussing this. And the for the rule, well its not posted but its more of a moral stance among the moderators and site owner that we don't do others homework.

Also if you read the rules again, this sort of topic is covered most likely under this statement: "By becoming a member you agreed to adhere to these guidelines. These guidelines are subject to change and a current version is always available in the forums."
Basically if its not listed there, then its been posted in every single thread regarding homework, or what deems to be homework.
Another unwritten rule is to respect the moderators and their decisions. :)

I am a kind person. I don't have over 10k posts of being rude. What I don't like is people taking advantage of others. I can proudly say all my homework and tests I've done in my time I did on my own. I actually went out and found my answer, instead of asking another person to just give it to me.

I'm done now... any further comments welcome via email. Anyone else who posts regarding homework or the such will recieve warning points.
