Having issues with dvd ripping and codecs - cant tell whats installed or not - stress

So here I am, on my last leg..

I've been trying for a day or so on how to rip dvds and each time ive ran into issues.

I've downloaded Medibuntu and then downloaded and installed libdvdcss as well as other codecs, and installed Dvd::rip and i'm having issues with it telling me that

"It seems that transcode ripping stopped short.
The movie has 161936 frames, but only 135073
were ripped. This is most likely a problem with your
transcode/libdvdread installation, resp. a problem with
this specific DVD."

so I went and installed libdvdread and it still didnt fix the issue.

so I uninstalled Dvd::rip and basically I can't tell what's installed and what's not installed anymore. and im close to wiping the drive and re-installing ubuntu fresh, because I don't understand how to find out what Ive got installed or not..

I need help. Major. I've tried looking up tutorials on how to encode with Mencoder and Mplayer, but I cant figure out how to install Divx or if I even have Divx installed....

Please respond with some sort of help that I can use...

Thoggen is a simple dvd ripper that's very easy to use. It has less features than some of the more advanced dvd rippers but it doesn't require as much setting up etc. I've also read good revues about Acidrip, although I've never used it myself.
vlc should also be able to rip dvds, but I've never managed to get it to work for me. (although it plays dvd's well.)
you can check with Synaptic package manager to see what is installed on your system. It's a good idea to write down what dependencies a package pulls in when you install something if you are experimenting.

Also, if you run
Code:

sudo apt-get autoremove
from the command line, this should remove some latent packages that are no longer needed. (dependencies for packages that have since been removed.)

I can vouch for dvdrip.

But make sure you have the latest libdvdcss library installed! Many DVD programs will use it but don't complain if it is not present, as they generally regard it as optional!

Has anyone ever got VLC to save movies it is playing. I tried myself but again always failed.

In my case converting MKV to AVI but every method I try stuffs up the sound!
