Have you used k3b to rip and encode a DVD?

...After trying just about every GUI there is for dvdripping / encoding, (none of them worked for me) I was downhearted at the thought of having to learn to use transcode from command line. Sigh.

However, then to my delight, I was flipping the k3b man page for an entirely unrelated reason, and noticed there was something about DVD ripping. Splendid! I thought. However, when I tried to use it, and clicked on the DVD as instructed by the man page, no menu / etc. came up to do with DVD ripping.

I looked at the DVD information, and saw that at the bottom it had something like "information / no copy". So I was wondering: does k3b have a problem with zone encrypted DVDs? Has anyone managed to rip a zone encrypted DVD with k3b?

Alternatively, I did manage to rip some DVDs to .vob files with some software (which doesn't encode). Then I thought, perhaps its possible to encode the .vob that I ripped with some other software on k3b?

So I tried to open the .vob with k3b on the encoding dialog, but then realised it was asking for a .xml project information file.

If anyone has managed to rip a DVD with k3b, could you post an example .xml file??

Thanks.
(PS. to all you command line enthusiasts out there, but before you ask, I appreciate it but, *no*, I really don't want to learn all the transcode commands! I'd like to use a GUI).

The best linux software for dvd backups I've found is k9copy.

You can try as well acidrip to rip/encode your DVDs

Sigh... (thanks, but)

...As I said, I've tried all these already! None of them worked!

Could someone post an example .xml file for me please?

Nevermind.

I updated k3b, perl-video-dvdrip and lsdvd and everything finally worked.

install libdvdcss2 that less than legal codec will break the encryption, then simply copy dvd from the tools menu. If you don't have a dual layer burner you will have to edit the file to get rid of the extra features so that you can fit it on a dvd before burning it. I don't know enough about it to tell you anymore...good luck.
