Nexus:

Again, thanks for your persistence with this.

I followed your directions exactly as stated. You will see the text below. After following the directions, I used the command line to update. As you can see, it appears to have worked. Even though I used the command line, the package manager popped up. It loaded, or updated, several programs.

I won't know, right away, if this solved the problem or not. Since the system would randomly freeze, it will take a day or two to know for sure. (I've never gone longer than a day without it freezing.) If it doesn't freeze in several days, I'll know it was a success. If it is a success, I'll post it as "solved." If it freezes, I'll create a fresh thread and try again.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you come upon this solution? Was my computer not downloading from appropriate sources? Was my system missing a critical file? Is there a link, or tutorial, that you could send me to so I could learn more about what transpired?

Once again, thanks for your help. If I could, I'd send you a Guiness, if you were inclined to indulge in such things.

Good, I'm glad we finally got it working again.

You say you've had this freezing problem with other distros. I'm leaning more towards a hardware problem at the moment. However it would be better if you made a fresh thread and gave more detailed information on your hardware.

I would still encourage you to mark this thread as solved.

It was when andrewthomas posted the repo links, they didn't look right.
Quote:

Because the repo links were not completely correct nothing was being downloaded. I'm surprised that no error messages appeared though.

No, it was just a matter of correcting the links.

Not that will deal specifically in this problem. LQ, is a good resource. The Ubuntu forum. Google, naturally If you have the room and horsepower, setup a distro of your choice as a virtual machine in virtualbox (or some other virtualisation software) and use that to practice with. You can break/repair it, practice commandline skills. If it all goes pearshaped no matter, get rid and start over. The best learning resource is time & patience. When you feel like throwing the towel in dig deep and carry on.

You're Welcome. You did well to hang in there besides, i'm not a guiness drinker

I'm afraid that 11.04 froze up after a few hours of use.
I will be posting again with the assumption that it is a hardware problem.
Thanks, Nexus and Andrewthomas for your help.
I think that we have eliminated software as the source of the problem. (Or did we???)
