Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

i installed mandrake 8.1 on a sony vaio lx-1 desktop and the following occured:
i have a mouse with wheel but the only mouse setup option that worked was standard ps2 mouse setup (wheel not operational).why?
i believe its a videocard test...during the install 3 rows of linux penguins come up onto the screen and a box pops up asking me something like whether i see the images..yes/no. whatever i press (yes/no) the screen freezes up into a mass of colours...basically it crashes.
if i restart then the installation proceeds and i enter the linux kde interface(or whatever i should call it) . BUT something is not quite right. it seems to think my monitor is about 4ft by 4ft! (if only). if i maximise a window it expands to way off the edge of my screen.
ive tried to adjust the resolution with the wizard with no success...as far as i remember my resolution is not an option (its 1024 x 768) so how do i fix this? its doubly unfortunate because i cant access the toolbar ...it s off the screen.
my graphics card is SIS 630B chipset...
then comes the sound. my card is a yamaha card ...i think ymf-740. do i need drivers for it? (ill check in a min after i post this) but any advise will be great. basically i had some mp3s on cd ....i accessed them and an error box says either the card is not configured properly or error in modprobe call. ??what is all this about
now the modem problems: i have a com one v56 usb light modem. the installer calls it thompson (wrong i guess) . i have feelings this wont work with this os so what modem can ayone reccomend?
ill now continue to try to fix these problems. any recommendations for how i should partiiton my 55 gig hd for mandrake? or any other help?
thanks! (im in newbie hell)
