Question Half working alsa Sound problem intel AC97

I have just recently upgraded to the 2.6 Kernel and the sound Is REALLY quiet even though every mixer bar on the Alsa mixer is set to full.
my system:

Intel Pentim 4 2.4 ghz
1 Gig of DDR ram
80 gig HDD
Gigabyte motherboard with onboard sound and LAN
NVIDIA GeForce 4 Ti 4200 <---( yes i wish i had bought an ATI card)
Mandrake 10 RC1
Kernel 2.6the alsa mixer is set to full

the sound card is an intel AC97 one and i am using the Default alsa driver (snd_intel or something) i have used this card before with Mandrake 9.2 and it worked great (good sound) however now it is acting up. I can hear the sound very faintly and very crackly
even though all the mixer bars on the "alsamixer" program are 100% up.

like i said the sound works it's just so quiet i can't hear it unless my ear is touching the speaker

please help if you can,

Cool

OK i re-installed Alsa and also fooled changed wich audio port my speakers were in and it is nice and loud now :-) however the sound is choppy (perhaps if i fool with the mixer a bit it will smooth things out.

also i am getting this error from XMMS when the sound is epscialy choppy:

** WARNING **: alsa_mmap_audio(): snd_pcm_mmap_commit returned 15053, expected 1

strange but...
at leat it is "working"

Pehaps

Hi,

Verify you kernel config .config.
make menuconfig
make gconfig
:-)

Try this
Sound card support Y
Alsa M
Sequencer M
OSS Api emul M
Verbose printk Y
PCI device
Intel i8x M
That's all . No OSS

Last but not list do you have all devices in /dev/snd ??

Good luck
