well, if you are not in a GUI, you cannot use graphical programs. Try running those from your graphical login instead of a terminal.

hi AlucardZero

thanks for ur quick reply

I think u have not understood my query.so iam explaining in detail
i have logged in as a normal user..
i used to do things that require root access in terminal like editing fstab/menu.lst...etc
prviously i was able to open these configuration files in gedit by typing the follwoing in root terminal
gedit /etc/fstab

but now i am getting error for this command

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

cannot open display:
Run 'gedit --help' to see a full list of available command line options.

i even cant open a nautilus window from root terminal which i was able to do till today afternoon

Obviously something has changed. My guess would be an update of your Windows manager.

You might try # gksu gedit /etc/fstab ... among about 10 other ways I can think of that might fix it on Debian. Don't know much about current Fedora though
