Data loss by overwrite (in nautilus)

I have lost some important data by following steps:

System: Fedora core 1 (GNOME 2.4)

I have a VFAT (Fat32) partition mounted. My data remains on that drive. To create a shortcut on GNOME desktop, I dragged and dropped the folder on desktop, but it was copied in place of creating shortcut. I terminated the copy process without allowing it to complete and then dropped it back on the original place to copy all the files back if they are moved in place of being copied. This was a mistake, as it asked me to overwrite the folder and after saying yes, in hope that it will overwrite only double copies, It removed all the files in the original folder and only copied files back which were on desktop.

I am not able to recover files from windows based file recovery programs (I have a dual boot with W2KP). Is there a way to recover those files?

Thanks,
Pratik
