GTK-Gnutella
 

Hi there!
People out there who use GTK-Gnutella, help me! I installed gtk-gnutella but when I start it, it tryies to connect to the servers but it can't connect. Maybe I need to configure something or specify other servers? Thanks in advance!

put it in your ~/.gtk-gnutella directory, and if that doesn't work then there is somethign else wrong... firewall or something

My RH 7.3 has its firewall set to medium... is that it? I hope not...

I also don't understand the part about forcing a local IP address, what should you set it to?

Also, for some stupid reason I cannot access sourceforge. (Its probably my location, and a cuple a stupids runnin it)

well try seeing if your gnutella port e.g 6346 is open, using nmap or something.

... found my IP on RH's Network Configuration tool... set GTK-Gnutella to use that as force IP... now about that port... nmap you say? I apologize first, its nearly midnight here and I'm running on fumes... do I type nmap 6346? At this point the man pages seem to me like heiroglyphs in King Tut's tomb... Again, sorry... I'm a zombie from all the work tossed to my desk (and it's just Wednesday for crying out loud)... zzzz..... zzzzz..... If you happen to reply and I don't respond right away... I've probably hit the sack, so I say now - thank you for your time...

I understand that the great firewall of china does block sourceforge. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if they were trying to block gnutella traffic too. Wouldn't want to incite dissent with any of those mp3s ;-)

Hi there! Well bxb32001, to scan your PC with nmap you should type:

nmap -sS -O localhost

And, by the way. My gtk-gnutella port is open but I still can't connect to any server 'cause the connection keeps failing. :(

Thanks wonderpun... I'll do that when I get home (yup, I'm at work, and there are no nix boxes in the vicinity for at least a mile or so).

Now why on earth would they block sourceforge? I mean, google was stupid enough, but sourceforge? (btw, I just work here, can't even speak the language).

I may have the exact same problem you have.... it keeps trying to connect but fails everytime. Hmmm, assuming the port wasn't open, what's next? Anyway, Il'll verify this later... thanks.

Hmmmm, port 6346 didn't show up when I did nmap, that may mean is closed as nmap tells me it won't list the closed ports... what should I do next?

Assuming the port IS closed should I open it up through RH's Firewall configuration tool?

And on the "force IP" dialog box, what should I put in? KDE recognizes the IP I have for my connection, is this what I put in?

Am I on the right track?

hmm ok well DOES gnutella pick up the right IP address for you? only force it if you can clearly see it's not... you can try using a different port, maybe your ISP has blocked 6346. just make sure it's not colliding with any other used ports.

have you got anywhere running gnutella with the firewall turned off? won't hurt for 10 minutes, will it?

I'll try my luck again tonight... the force IP box reads 0.0.0.0 when the check box is unchecked... hmmmm, I'll try checking it with no values (or that 0.0.0.0) and see if it picks the IP up. I'll also turn the firewall off, shouldn't hurt for 10 minutes... It'll be sad if my ISP blocks port 6346...

Can you open a specific port if it is closed? I assume that RH's Firewalling has shut this port down. I'll' also check the Redhat Manuals and see if I can do this.... thanks for replying Acid.....

I turned off the firewall... nada. Still the same. I do notice though that the console continues to say: warning: cannot resolve gnutella-again.hostcache.com ... something like that.

does that mean anything? does that mean I should get your hosts file?... hmmmmmmm....

well i think it's a good idea to get one anyway. makes the network more efficient. i don't *think* the site exists... i can't ping it.
