Unhappy GTK+ 1.2 doesn't work in GNOME 2!

I recently installed Mandrake 9.0 (which comes with GNOME 2 in a standard installation). However, as you may have noticed, 2.0 is a major change from the early 1.4 builds, and one difference is that it uses GTK+ 2.0. I want to be able to use themes from GTK+ 1.2, but even though a whole bunch of them were installed, I cannot find a way to get them working. Does anyone here have more knowledge about this?
