gthumb crashes, when I try to import photos from my nikon camera

Hello
When I connect my Nikon Coolpix 990 camera to my laptop, before starting linux, and then I start gthumb and I select import photos, I receive the message:
Quote:
An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not claim the USB device'): Could not claim interface 0 (Operation not permitted). Make sure no other program or kernel module (such as sdc2xx, stv680, spca50x) is using the device and you have read/write access to the device.
In the top left corner is written nikon coolpix 990, so he sees the camera correctly.

When I enter gthumb as root, I receive for a short time the Message:
Loading camera drivers from /usr/lib/gphoto/2.1.5
Then the program crashes and I receive the message:
The Application "gthumb" has quit unexpectedly.

When I connect my camera after starting linux, my computer opens automaticaly a window, where I select: "Import Photos". Then gthumb crashes the same way as I described it when I enter gthumb as root.

I use Fedora core 4 with gnome

my 775 uses Flash cards... Not sure what the newer 990 uses, however, I just bought a cheap USB card reader and just mount the card and xfer my photos...

Much easier then trying to get the camera to work with linux through drivers...

the 990 uses flashcards too
I would prefer to solve the problem, and not to buy a card reader

Code:
gphoto2 --port "usb:" --camera "Nikon CoolPix 990" --get-all-files
as root I receive the message
Quote:
Segmentation fault
And as normal user I receive the message
Quote:
*** Error ***
An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not claim the USB device'): Could not claim interface 0 (Operation not permitted). Make sure no other program or kernel module (such as sdc2xx, stv680, spca50x) is using the device and you have read/write access to the device.
