Grub question
 

Hey all.

I recently installed SUSE via ftp on a second hd. Works fine. Grub gives the option of booting either win, linux, failsafe and memcheck i think. I know that it is possible to edit grub form suse, but is there any way of adding cd-rom as a boot option and if so.....how? Please keep in mind that this is my first practical experience with any linux distro...please spell it out for me.

It is probably a better idea to set up the boot chain in your BIOS to your preferences. I normally use floppy-CD-HD, meaning that it will boot from floppy if there is a floppy inserted, from CD if a bootable CD is inserted, and if that fails it will proceed to boot from the hard drive (meaning Grub will load in my case).

I appreciate your reply but this is not really what I want to do. I am aware of the possibility of configuring the bios boot chain and have set my bios to boot form first hd only. I'm just wondering if it is possible to add a cd-rom boot option to Grub, and if so..how?

just wondering, but why would you want to boot from CD at Bootloader time when you can just as easily set your machine bootchain? Just curious.....

1. Because I find it easier that way, since I, as mentioned before, have configured my bios to boot from primary master hd only. (mainly for faster booting, and for convinience as well ... I tend to forget discs in my drives)

2. Because I consider it be be a neat feature, making some things easier and faster for me. Instead of editing the bios every time I wish to boot from cd-rom, all I would have to do, is choosing the boot form cd-rom option in grub (if possible to add). Well, I might just be lazy....

I have a Samsung dvd-rom SD616Q set as secondary master. Not that I can see why the product matter, rather than where it is located.

ok, but if you put the CD-ROM higher in the boot chain, it will still boot from the hard drive unless there is a bootable CD in your CD-ROM drive!!!

Davec, ffs. I've said it before, I do not want to change my bios bootchain, it's perfectly fine as it is. With all due respect, I believe you missed the point.

I took a quick glance at the grub docs (perhaps you should have a thorough glance at them :)), but saw no mention of booting CDs. Have you tried to simply add a menu entry in grub.conf which points to your CD-ROM? If this doesn't work I think you may have to resign to changing your BIOS and remember to take your disks out.

Yes, I've tried to edit to the conf....didn't work, however. Must likely I did it wrong.
