grub loader problem

i am having a dual boot system with red hat enterprise linux 5 and windows vista.My problem is that i have given the following command at console

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=446 count =1

then i rebooted my system, after that my boot loader was removed, i was able to re-install the grub by going thru rescue mode but now when i am trying to start the windows vista, it is just restarting my system, what i should do now.i have already tired to re-install the Linux but no result

plz help

First, the poll does not relate to the subject of the thread.

When you re-installed Linux, did you instruct it to also install the bootloader (GRUB). What happened after the re-install? ("no result" does not tell us much)

yes, i instructed it to reinstall the GRUB, and linux is working properly but windows is not working????

Do you get a GRUB menu with Windows as one of the options?

If so, what happens when you select Windows?

Running in Linux, look at /boot/grub/menu.lst and post here. Also, tell us the partition layout---eg Windows on hda1, Linux / on hda2, etc.

ya i get a grub menu with windows a one of teh options and when i select that it just restart my system
partition layout is like (hd0,1) for windows and (hd0,4) for linux

Again, please post the contents of /boot/grub/menu.lst (the GRUB configuration file)

If Windows is (hd0,1), then what is in the first partition (hd0,0)?

Are you aware of the outcomes of the command you typed that caused the problem in the first place?!

Did someone tell you to type that as a joke? Or were you intentionally trying to erase your bootloader?

Simple solution;format complete HD,install Vista(first),install RHEL.Problem fixed.

That's a bit extreme for a simple bootloader problem... it would work, but it's a bit extreme...
