Grub install messed up hda
Here's what I did to install grub
Code:
bash->grub Grub loader without a hitch... Problem is... now I can't run Windows XP no more! Windows was on /dev/hda, I think the 'setup (hd0)' messed the begening of the partition, but how? Isn't it suppose to write in the MBR only? Does anybody know a way to get windows back? Someway to reinstall windows' bootloader? Anything that doesn't involve completely reinstalling windows. PS: Tried installing lilo instead(just to see), well guess what, loading windows(rootnoverify (0,0) chainloader +1) prompted grub... Please if you think you know a solution, post... I'm desperate, I'm willing to try anything. |
Windows is still there, the option to boot to it isn't there. Here is the windows part of my menu.lst
title Windows 2000 root (hd0,0) makeactive chainloader +1 try that. |
That isn't the problem: I do have a windows entry...
Here's something very concluant, from linux, I can load the windows partition anymore(too many mounted fs...) |
If you have XP installation CDs, then boot from it and then go to the recovery console and do
fixmbr I'm not sure about the exact procedure but I'm sure there are tons of threads dealing with this. another thing you can try is get hold of a msdos boot floppy (the sort of thing that you can make with win95/98/me), boot from it and then run fdisk /mbr But make sure you have a way to boot linux; i.e. make a boot floppy. |
When I boot the installation cd, it gives me no choice(why doesn't this surprise me?), it just brings me straight to installation(disk partitioning).
How do you get in recovery mode? |
SOLVED!!!
